HealthWorks! Healthy Living Series: Why Healthy Eating Is Important
by The Center for Better Health and Nutrition/HealthWorks! at Cincinnati Children’s
Shelley Kirk, PhD, RD, Director, HealthWorks!: “A variety of healthy foods provide the best fuel for our bodies. It gives us energy to do all the things we need to do, helps us feeling our best, keeps our bodies working the way they should.”
“Eating foods that are good for us may help to keep our bodies healthy inside and out and reduce some diseases.”
“Making changes can be hard. Start by setting a few goals you feel ready to work on. Make sure you select goals that you can measure. For example, instead of setting a goal to drink more water while limiting sugary drinks, you can instead have a goal of drinking at least four bottles of water and having no more than one sugary drink a day. It’s easier to select goals you can measure so you can keep track of your progress.”
“Work on eating meals and snacks ‘mindfully.’ Examples of mindful eating are: Eating meals and snacks without distractions. This means not being on the phone, watching TV or using a computer. Slowing down the rate of eating. You can eat more slowly if you’re sitting down, taking time to enjoy every bite, and eating with others. When there’s more conversation with others at meals and snacks, you will more easily take longer to eat.”
“Healthy eating is good for everyone, regardless of your age. This way families can work together to make changes that establish healthier eating habits. When there’s family support, making healthful changes with eating habits is easier to do.”
